How to Talk With a Loved One About Home Care

Family Caregiving1 min read

Starting the conversation can feel daunting. A few gentle approaches that help keep it respectful and collaborative.

Raising the subject of home care with a parent or loved one can feel uncomfortable. You may worry about hurting their feelings, or that they’ll feel their independence is being taken away. Approached with care, though, this conversation can bring relief to everyone.

Choose the right moment

Find a calm, unhurried time—not in the middle of a stressful event. A relaxed setting helps the conversation feel like a discussion rather than a decision already made.

Lead with what matters to them

Frame support around their goals: staying at home, keeping up with a favorite activity, or having more energy for the people they love. Home care is a way to protect those things.

Listen more than you speak

Ask open questions and give them space to share their concerns. Acknowledge their feelings, even if you see things differently.

Start small

Suggest a few hours of help with one or two tasks. Many people find that once they meet a caregiver and experience the support, they welcome it.

Include them in every decision

Whenever possible, involve your loved one in choosing the kind of support, the schedule, and the plan. Care works best when it’s built together.
